Sounding Moby-Dick

'Sounding' derives from the book Moby-Dick by Herman Melville, and is an evocation of the bygone crafts of sailing and whaling and the struggles of men at sea, and also from its powerful and ever-relevant dissection of monomania.

Neon Drums Series

Neon portals and ladders of light in acoustic drums. While these works picks up on the minimalists' reduction to simple geometric structures, serial reproduction, and the use of industrially produced music instruments, it imbues these elements with social references. Alluded to great American minimal and concept artists such as Dan Flavin or Dan Graham, an integral aspect of this works is the references to recent Chilean history: the military junta of Augusto Pinochet. The light flowing through his sculptures and mirror works can be read both as a metaphor for enlightenment and as one for economic and political power wielded in democratic and totalitarian systems to regulate and control all kinds of energies, be they financial, electricity, goods, or information.

Monaural: LP paintings

A group of new paintings focuses on famous album covers. White mixes up both the original content as well as the meaning of these images and forces us to look and interpret them again. A large freestanding work is based on the legendary ‘White Album’ aptly titled The Beatles (2016). It is a centrepiece of the exhibition. White recreated the gatefold record as a sculpture painting five times the scale of the original, a monument to music. The recognition of their design is shared by many of us on an unspoken visceral level. Present in our visual memory, they are an expression of a period or particular time in our lives. According to #MikeNewton : “These are exercises in both loving fidelity to their widely-revered sources, and cheeky impertinence in the face of fading cultural legacies.”

'Atmosphere for Enjoyment' Exhibition: Harry Bertoia’s Environment for Sound

From May 3 to September 25, 2016, the Museum of Arts and Design in NYC presents two exhibitions focused on Harry Bertoia (1915–1978). Referred to collectively as 'Sonambient, these sculptures are interactive, kinetic, and audible forms consisting of bundles of metal rods that collide and set off radiant tones when agitated by wind or human touch. In his Pennsylvania barn, he recorded approximately 400 tapes, eventually producing eleven LPs with titles such as 'Phosphorescence' and 'Ocean Mysteries'.

Ultra Acoustic Materials

In this 'Golfvorm' installation series on ultra acoustic waves, the artist focusses on gravity and time. The iron elements come in three different constellations: iron as a mineral, iron as a steel component and iron oxidising in an aesthetic interpretation of a 'buckling' set-up. #ChristophDeBoeck  #HelgePfeiffer #SoundArt #Acoustics #Material #ContemporaryArt #InstallationArt #SoundSculpture #Sculpture #UltraAcousticEmission
